Trees are generally regarded as being the largest land living organisms on earth.

We can tell the age of a tree by counting the rings in a cross section of a tree. Each ring represents one year’s growth. The rings reveal other aspects of the tree’s life as well: wide rings mark years of good growth, with lots of mild and wet weather.

Meanwhile, narrow rings tell us of cold years when growing conditions were poor, or when the tree was overshadowed by surround trees, and therefore unable to make food from sunlight.

Most of the trees of the world are divided into three classes: broadleaves, conifers and palms. Broadleaves and conifers are relevant to us here in Ireland.

Most conifers in Ireland are evergreen, which means that they retain their leaves (or needles) throughout the year. Most of Ireland’s broadleaves are deciduous, which means that they drop their leaves in the winter. Of course, there are always exceptions!

Holly and arbutus are two native broadleaf trees that retain their leaves in the winter, making them evergreen broadleaves.

Larch is a conifer grown in Ireland that sheds all its leaves (or needles) in the winter, making it a deciduous conifer.

Using a process called transpiration; large tropical rainforest trees draw up to 1,000 litres of water up through their roots and trunks and out through their leaves in a single day. Trees transpire more water that any other living organism.
