National Tree Week Launch Ceremony

Event details: Come and join the Tree Council of Ireland and our sponsors, Vodafone Ireland and Coillte for this family fun day, open to all, with tree and wood related activities and demonstrations. Activities will include guided tree and nature trails, bird walks, treasure hunts, willow weaving, den-building whereby children can get involved in building dens using natural materials from the forest, an introduction to orienteering, wood craft stalls and demonstrations, puc fada, field archery and much, much more. There will also be traditional folk entertainment and facepainting throughout the afternoon. Bring along your own picnic or avail of the café facility on site and enjoy a free day out with the family in the natural beauty of Avondale Forest Park. Special guest Éamon de Buitléar, renowned film maker, author and musician, will officially launch National Tree Week 2011 with a tree planting ceremony at 12 noon.

Event: Art Project: Transformation of a conifer plantation to a permaent forest

Event Details. This is an ongoing SLOW ART forest web project since 2008. Holly Wood is the smallest Close to Nature - Continuous Cover forest transformation project in Ireland. The artist filmaker is showing how conifer plantations can be managed to create permanent ecological and economically viable forests. The artist has worked with Jan Alexander, who founded Crann and is the communications officer for ProSilva Ireland, a subgroup of the 26 country organisation involved in teaching how conifer plantations can be transformed into permanent, non clear-fell forests, as is common in East Europe. The Kiltipper Woods Care centre will provide a facility for refreshments in their new café and the Dublin Mountains Partnership will have Volunteer Rangers available to possible take the children on a walk to the reservoir at Bohernabreena – time permitting.
This event will also dovetail with a celebration of International Year of Forests 2011.

Event details: Consist of a guided walk on Coillte Life Project. Curragh Chase LIFE yew woodland is located just off the N69 road, close to the village of Kilcornan, Co. Limerick, and is part of Coillte Forest Park. Curragh Chase Woodland is a priority yew woodland and also designated for the conservation of the lesser horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros). The yew woodland is on a high limestone ridge above the stream valley and in places has steep cliffs or ridges. This type of woodland is of particular rarity in Ireland and is of national significance in size and quality. The mature grove of yew is regenerating but is engulfed by both broadleaves (primarily beech and sycamore) and conifers. The mixed canopy also includes native species such as oak, birch and hazel. There is much holly, hawthorn and bramble in the understorey.
