National Tree Week Launch Ceremony

Event Details: A Guided Walk Remarkable Trees of Glasnevin
In celebration of National Tree Week a special guided tour will be presented introducing some of the most beautiful and interesting trees of the National Botanic Gardens. This walk will commence at 2.30 pm from the Education and Visitor Centre in the gardens.

Event details: Trees and their produce have played a significant role in the Irish diet. Taking a chronological approach, this presentation will explore the range of produce consumed from well-known items like hazel and apple to more unusual food bearing trees like medlar. The economic and dietary importance of tree produce will be explored and illustrated and also how these items have declined in popularity in the Irish diet using a variety of documentary accounts.

Short description/details of Event: Each year the Horticulture Section of Limerick County Council arranges for the Cathaoirleach; to plant an oak tree at a location chosen by him. We arrange for a plaque to be placed beside the tree commemorating this event. The horticulture section will also be arranging for approximately 2000 free saplings (Alder, Beech, Birch, Rowan and Oak) to be distributed to the general public through our three Recycling Centres in Mungret, Kilmallock and Newcastle West.

Dooney Rock forms part of the Lough Gill Special Area of Conservation and has been designated by Coillte as a biodiversity site for a number of years. Details: Conor Rush has been making sculptures from Irish Hardwoods for many years. During that time he has also been growing trees from seed and planting them out in various places. During this talk Conor will discuss gathering seeds, growing on,
choosing sites, planting out, aftercare and pruning and show examples of various
seedlings, different woods and their possible uses. Some of his sculptures and the

Event details: Celebrate Tree Week in Powerscourt Gardens with a way around Powerscourt ‘s unique collection of trees which have been planted over the past two centuries. This collection includes the North American conifers, which were the 'exotic' plants of the 19th century. The relatively kind climate at Powerscourt has helped many of these trees grow rapidly. Other types of trees at Tower Valley include the Sitka Spruce, Western Red Cedar, European Silver Fir, Dawn Redwood, Torrey Pine and the Giant Sequoia among others.
