Event: Not Enough Wood to Hang a Man - A Guided Tree Walk in the Burren National Park, County Clare
Venue: Burren National Park. Meet at Gortlecka Cross, Kilnaboy (51R 310 945)

Other Details:  “Not enough wood to hang a man” was the colourful phrase uttered by Cromwellian Lieutenant General Ludlow to describe the dearth of woodland in the Burren in the 17th century. It is also the title of a guided tree walk on Sunday the 11th of March which will be led by author and guide Tony Kirby. Tony will seek to identify at least a dozen native tree types during the afternoon. Moreover, there will be informative and entertaining discussion about the uses and folklore of each tree species. The remarkable and still evolving story of the Burren and woodland will also feature as will some of the region’s early wildflowers.
The fee for the walk is €10 euros per adult; under 16s are free of charge.

Event:  1000+ Trees for Cork
Cork Environmental Forum are being helped by communities in Cork City and County to plant over 1000 trees during National Tree Week. This has been possible through the kind donation by local Cork man Padraig Coakley. One of Padraig’s hobbies is to grow the oak saplings from acorns and the ash from seed gathered locally.

The Irish Natural Forestry Foundation will kick off the planting of the saplings on Sunday 4th March as part of their open day. Other communities and projects involved include Midleton Tidy Towns who are planting 100 trees in conjunction with local schools. At Fota on the 8th March 20 trees will be planted at the Scouting Ireland Campsite, Fota Wildlife Park are planting an additional 200 trees in the park during tree week. IRD Duhallow will support the planting of 100 trees in a number of communities in their area. Macroom – 100 trees will be planted in the Carrigaphooca Castle Demense and Liscarroll Community Council will plant a further 50 trees in their area. Ballygarvan –Green-Schools Ireland are supporting local schools with the planting of 200 trees in conjunction with Will and Away outdoor education company at a tree planting initiative at Ballinreeshig Nature Farm, this planting will take place a little later on 20th March!

In the city Colaiste Chriost Ri will plant 100 trees at their community garden at Capwell. NICHE Food Focus Project in Knocknaheeny are planting 45 trees with community members in a green area near the community garden site. Douglas Community Association/ Tidy Towns will plant 10 trees in the Mangala Park and the Lifetime Lab. will add 10 trees to their garden. A further 18 trees will be planted by the community in Togher, with Blackpool Community Centre planting 10 trees.

Other Details: To mark National Tree Week, 4 - 10 March, Letterkenny Institute of Technology's newly formed Gardening Club has organised a lunch time talk from Raymond Treacy, Dunwiley Nurseries, on Thursday, 8 March, at 1.00 pm. Raymond, who has many years of experience in landscaping, will discuss, "The Role, Contribution & Usage of Trees & Shrubs in our Environment." The talk is open to both the college community and the public at large. It is free of charge.

Raymond will cover things like: selecting the right tree for a garden or other site, native trees, tree as habitat for wildlife, correct planting methods, maintenance, pests & problems and Forestry and Horticulture as a business and source of local employment. It will be a very useful and informative session. Anyone with even a small interest in gardening or the environment will be guaranteed to find out something useful or get some gardening tips. There will an opportunity to ask questions.

The LYIT Gardening Club will also hold a Tree Planting Ceremony at 11 am on Wednesday, 7 March, at An Dínlann in LYIT.
Note:  Raymond Treacy is a local business man with many years experience in the nursery and landscape gardening business. He studied Agriculture and joined the Department of Agriculture. His interests range from farming to forestry and to sustainable/renewable resources such as wind energy. He is a committee member of Donegal Woodland Owners Society Ltd Co-Op and runs Dunwiley Nurseries Ltd for over 20 years producing 2½ acres of nursery stock, mainly semi-mature trees plus shrubs, etc.

Background: IKEA has teamed up with the Tree Council of Ireland and Fingal County Council to create native Irish woodlands at various locations in the Dublin area. Under the ‘Foot of Forest’ Campaign, every time a member of the IKEA Family loyalty card programme swipes their card in store, IKEA makes a donation to the Tree Council of Ireland to create one square foot of forest. Since the partnership began in 2010, a total of 10 acres of native woodland have been planted in Donabate, Santry and Blanchardstown and a further 5 acres will be planted in Blanchardstown’s Waterville Park and Dunsink during and around this year’s Tree Week. Event Details:  Author and forestry expert Michael Carey will give a walking tour of the trees in Powerscourt Gardens. Michael is from County Wicklow and has written a fantastic book on the area called 'Wicklow's trees and woodlands over four centuries'. Michael has worked in the National Soil Survey, State Forest Service and Coillte and also as a forestry and management consultant. The walking tour should prove very enjoyable and you will come away armed with plenty of new information on the trees in Wicklow!

Participants at this event will be treated to both a social history as well as an insight into the progression of woodland development in Wicklow from the seventeenth century through to the present time.
