Tree Council Initiatives
The Tree Council co-ordinates a number of national initiatives such as National Tree Week in
partnership with Coillte and Tree Day in partnership with Tetra Pak while supporting worthwhile
community projects such as the SuperValu Tidy Towns competition.
In 2019 we helped to co-ordinate, along with the Irish Tree Society, Ireland’s entry into the European Tree of the Year 2020. The Witches Yew in Blarney Castle is now one of the 16th finalists in the competition. The winner is to be announced on March 17th 2020.
And we are involved in the Laudato Tree Project which is Ireland’s contribution to the Great Green Wall –an incredible
global initiative to plant 8,000 km of trees, spanning 13 countries, right across Africa and to establish a mosaic of
green areas in the Sahel region south of the Sahara.
Tetra Pak Tree Day is celebrated on the first Thursday of October every year to inspire an awareness of trees.
Over 1,000 sapling trees are given out to primary schools across Ireland
thanks to the generous sponsorship of Tetra Pak.
National Tree Week organised by the Tree Council of Ireland since 1985 and in partnership with Coillte since 1989,
is a week long programme of events to celebrate all things trees. It normally takes place in the month of March.
The Tidy Towns Tree Project Award worth €1,000 is a special competition sponsored by the Tree Council of Ireland
as part of the annual National Tidy Towns Competition.
Our Tree Scheme allows you to commemorate a loved one,
or an important event by giving you the opportunity to have a tree planted in their name
