Beech

These trees are known for their smooth, grey bark, which develops distinctive ridges as they age. Beech trees typically have dark green, oval-shaped leaves with pointed tips, which turn a golden bronze colour in the autumn before falling off for the winter. Beech trees produce small, triangular nuts known as beechnuts, encased in prickly husks. These nuts are edible and are an important food source for various wildlife, including birds and mammals. Beech trees can live for several centuries, with some specimens reaching ages of 200 to 300 years or more.
