Douglas Fir has a distinct conical shape with thick, ridged bark. The needles of Douglas fir are flat and needle-like and they radiate out from all sides of the twigs. They are dark green on top and have a lighter green or white underside. Its cones are distinctive and have a unique appearance compared to other firs. They are pendant (hanging downward), cylindrical, and have three-pointed bracts extending from each scale. The Douglas Fir is prized for its straight grain, resistance to decay, and excellent strength-to-weight ratio.
