Spanish Chestnut has a broad, rounded crown with spreading branches. The bark is greyish-brown and deeply furrowed. The leaves are elongated, with toothed margins. They are dark green in colour and alternate along the branches. In autumn, the leaves turn yellow or brown before falling. Spanish chestnut trees produce small, pale yellow to white flowers that bloom in late spring or early summer. The flowers are borne in long catkins and are pollinated by insects, particularly bees. The fruit is the chestnut, which is encased in a spiny husk known as a burr. Each burr typically contains two to three chestnuts. The nuts are rich in carbohydrates and are edible after roasting or boiling.
