As part of National Tree Week 2023, the Tree Council of Ireland, in partnership with Coillte and Easy Treesie/Crann, led a significant tree-planting initiative at Coláiste Chiaráin, Croom, Co. Limerick, where students, staff, and visiting American exchange students from Spring-Ford, Pennsylvania, took part in a biodiversity-focused event that showcased the impact of sustained environmental action.
The school’s long-running biodiversity project, supported by the Tree Council and its partners, has continued to grow and now includes nearly 7,500 trees, a biodiversity walkway, and an orchard, forming the established Coláiste Chiaráin Biodiversity Park. Following the initial planting programme, the Tree Council of Ireland returned to the school in 2025 to plant a further 2,000 native trees, significantly expanding the woodland and strengthening the site's biodiversity and educational value.
During National Tree Week 2023, 100 Nordic Maple trees were planted on the school grounds, supplied by Coillte, along with a Morello Cherry tree gifted by Easy Treesie. The event featured presentations from Principal Gerard O’Sullivan, Brendan Fitzsimons, CEO of the Tree Council of Ireland, and Orla Farrell of Easy Treesie, who highlighted how school-led planting contributes to the national goal of planting one million trees through the Easy Treesie campaign.
This tree-planting initiative, together with the subsequent expansion in 2025, reflects the Tree Council of Ireland’s broader commitment to climate action, youth engagement, and the restoration of Ireland’s tree heritage. Through partnerships with schools, communities, and organisations such as Coillte and Easy Treesie, the Tree Council continues to build momentum towards a greener, more resilient future.
