The Tree Council of Ireland is proud to support the People's Peace Forest, Ireland's contribution to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Peace Forest Initiative. More than a tree-planting project, the People's Peace Forest is a growing network of native woodlands that symbolises reconciliation, environmental restoration, and a shared commitment to building a more sustainable and peaceful future across the island of Ireland.
Following the launch of the initiative at the Monaghan Peace Campus in 2025, the Tree Council of Ireland worked with local schools and communities to establish new areas of native woodland. Planting projects included Ballybay Central National School, St. Tiarnach's Primary School, Clones, and St. Mary's Boys' National School, Monaghan. These projects provide valuable habitats for wildlife while encouraging pupils to develop a lifelong appreciation of Ireland's natural environment.
Through the People's Peace Forest, the Tree Council of Ireland is helping to demonstrate how tree planting can strengthen both communities and the environment. By engaging schools, young people, local authorities, and community organisations, the initiative creates lasting green spaces that promote biodiversity, environmental education, and a shared sense of responsibility for Ireland's natural heritage.
The People's Peace Forest is a living legacy of hope, renewal, and collaboration. As the initiative continues to grow, it will create new opportunities for communities across Ireland to come together through the shared goals of woodland creation, biodiversity enhancement, and environmental stewardship.
