The lodgepole pine has a variety of forms depending on the seed source. The English name comes from a North American inland type which was used to support Native American lodges hence the name. The Latin name, 'contorta' better describes the major variants planted in Ireland. Lodgepole pine produces small, egg-shaped cones. These cones often remain closed until they are exposed to high temperatures, such as those produced by forest fires. This adaptation allows the tree to quickly recolonize burned areas. Up to 25m.
