Turkey Oak has a broad, rounded crown and a straight trunk with greyish-brown bark. The leaves are alternate, simple, and deeply lobed with bristie-tipped lobes. The leaves are dark green on the upper surface and paler green underneath. Like other oak species, Turkey oak produces acorns as its fruit. The acorns are ovoid or oblong and enclosed in a scaly cupule. They take about 18 months to mature and are an important food source for wildlife. It should be noted that this tree is a host of the Knopper Oak Gall wasp (Andricus quercuscalicis) which, during certain years, can reduce the acorn crop of our native oak population thus having an impact on their ability to naturally regenerate.
